Described as “Ghibli Gothic”, When Marnie Was There is the beautiful and haunting latest from the beloved Japanese animation studio. It tells the story of an emotionally distant teenage girl sent to live with relatives in the countryside. She quickly becomes obsessed with an abandoned mansion, and infatuated with a girl who lives there who isn’t everything she seems.
Based on the young adult novel of the same name by Joan G Robinson, the film will be released in both Japanese and English language versions this summer, coinciding with a complete retrospective of the Ghibli catalogue – including a new English dub of Isao Takahata’s 1991 film Only Yesterday featuring voicework from Daisy Ridley and Dev Pate.
