Despite her proclivity for popping up in well-meaning awards bait, Alicia Vikander is fast becoming our favourite actress. Next up for the Ex Machina and The Danish Girl star is Derek Cianfrance’s swooning period drama The Light Between Oceans, which sees Vikander play the wife of Michael Fassbender’s lighthouse keeper.
Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by ML Stedman, Cianfrance’s follow-up to his 2012 film The Place Beyond the Pines also stars Rachel Weisz and Slow West’s Caren Pistorius. The film, which takes place on a remote Australian island shortly after the end of World War One, follows the couple’s discovery of a newborn baby that has washed up on shore in a small boat.
The Light Between Oceans looks sumptuous and sorrowful in equal measure, with Fassbender and Vikander the perfect match. Take a look for yourself and let us know your thoughts @LWLies
The Light Between Oceans is set for release 6 January 2017.
