Two years on from the release of Denis Villeneuve’s muscular cartel caper, Sicario, Stefano Sollima picks up the story for this intriguing sounding follow-up, heading back to the US-Mexico border to explore the escalating war on drugs.
Sicario 2: Soldado, which is set to arrive early 2018, follows Matt (Josh Brolin) and Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) as they attempt to track down notorious cartel boss Carlos Reyes, who’s been trafficking terrorists across the border. But what initially appears to be a straightforward hit job soon reveals itself as an elaborate CIA shadow war.
Catherine Keener joins the cast alongside Brolin and Del Toro, who both reprise their roles from the first film, with Taylor Sheridan once again on scripting duties. Italian director Sollima showed promise with his 2016 film Suburra, so we’re looking forward to finding out what he has in store for us here.
