Kids… don’t drive with your headphones on. What Edgar Wright has done with Baby Driver is make a fantasy fiction film about a cool guy who harbours the uncanny ability to drive like a demon when he’s got both buds in and the volume turned to max.
Plus, he’s a getaway driver, so what he’s doing is illegal anyway, so in a sense it’s fair game. But seriously it’s good to have Wright back in the directorial fold after the four-year hiatus between this and his previous lark, the elbow-fighting lagergeddon of The World’s End. And this new one looks pretty rad.
Ansel Elgort plays the eponymous baby, a getaway driver extraordinaire whose preternatural skills behind the wheel make him first choice among seasoned crims (Jamie Foxx, John Hamm). The film received its world premiere at the 2017 South By Southwest Film Festival to positive critical notices, and has been described as film that’s powered by music in the same way that a car is powered by petrol.
We’re itching to see it, but we’ll have to wait until the dying days of summer 2017. In the meantime, check out the trailer and let us know your thoughts @LWLies
Baby Driver is released 28 June.
**Update – 12 April, 2017**
