We’re big fans of Julia Ducournau’s automotive body horror Titane here at LWLies, and couldn’t be happier to have teamed up with MUBI to celebrate its release on their platform as of March 16 (today!)

For our latest creative brief, we set our readers the challenge of creating a portrait of lead actor Agathe Rousselle as Alexia, incorporating some element of the film’s mechanical imagery, and we were absolutely thrilled with the results, which showcased a wide range of creativity, imagination and talent.

Alas, there can only be one winner – Chloe Davis wowed us with her striking entry, mixing vivid colours with a gorgeous portrait of Agathe. We feel Chloe really captured the spirit of Titane. Bravo! Chloe will receive a £250 tattoo voucher from Sophie Mo, and a whole year of MUBI GO.

We also picked four runners up, who will each receive a year’s subscription to MUBI, and you can see their entries below.

You can watch Titane on MUBI in the UK and Ireland from today, and get 30 days of MUBI entirely free. Look out for our next creative brief on the LWLies website soon!

To celebrate the recent home entertainment release of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, we set our readers a design challenge inspired by the film and the wider Breaking Bade universe.

The brief was to create a bumper sticker featuring a slogan and iconography from the film or show – something you might find on Jesse Pinkman’s ride. Now we’re delighted to reveal the winning entry.

Designed by Holly Battle, we love this illustrated effort which features the eponymous getaway car kicking up a cloud of dust along below a line of dialogue from the film: “I’ve gone where the universe takes me my whole life. It’s better to make those decisions for yourself.”

Thanks to everyone who took part – we’ll be back with another creative brief in the new year.

El Camino is available to own on Blu-ray and DVD now.

One of TV’s best-loved characters made his long-awaited big-screen debut last year, as fans were reunited with Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) in a white-knuckle thriller that brought a fitting end to the Breaking Bad saga.

To celebrate the home entertainment release of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, which is available now to own on Blu-ray, we’re setting a new creative brief inspired by the film and its parent series.

The Brief

The Chevy El Camino is one of the iconic American motor cars. Per the film’s title, it plays a pivotal role in the plot, providing Pinkman with a means of escape from the compound where he was left stranded in the Breaking Bad season finale.

For this brief we’d like you to design a bumper sticker featuring a slogan and iconography inspired by the extended Breaking Bad universe. Your design can be any shape or size, but must be totally original and should contain at least one illustrated element.

The Prize

The overall winner, as judged by our in-house design team, will receive a 46” LED TV, a Blu-ray player and a Blu-ray copy of El Camino all in time for Christmas, so you can catch a ride with Pinkman and co from the comfort of your own home, in high-definition. Two runners up will also receive a copy of the film on Blu-ray.

How to Enter

All entries must be sent to competitions@tcolondon.com under the subject line ‘El Camino creative brief’ by midday GMT on Monday 14 December.

You can also send us your entry via Twitter or Instagram by tagging @LWLies, but be sure to email us a hi-res version of your entry as well. Please remember to include your full name so we know who to credit. Good luck!

Like so many female artists of her generation, Swedish trailblazer Hilma af Klint was misjudged and largely ignored by the mainstream art establishment. Thankfully her legacy has now been reclaimed by a brilliant documentary called Beyond the Visible, which is out now via Modern Films.

To celebrate the film’s release, we set a creative brief asking our readers to design a postcard inspired by Klint’s work. Judging the entries was our in-house design team alongside Beyond the Visible director Halina Dyrschka, who had this to say about the winning entry:

“It was hard to choose! So many nice and good ideas. I picked the one I liked best at first look – it is one of the rare paintings that is trying to find its own style while still being very close to the original painting by Hilma.”

Check out the winners and runners up below, along with a gallery of all the entries we received. A huge thank you to everyone who took part. We’ll be back with another creative brief soon.

Could you design a postcard inspired by Hilma af Klint? https://lwlies.com/articles/hilma-af-klint-beyond-the-visisble-creative-brief/ Fri, 25 Sep 2020 10:00:25 +0000 https://lwlies.com/?post_type=article&p=25105 Our latest creative brief draws from the seductive abstract style of the pioneering artist, as captured in Beyond the Visible.

The post Could you design a postcard inspired by Hilma af Klint? appeared first on Little White Lies.

]]>

“Art history has to be rewritten.” This is the quote that piqued director Halina Dyrschka’s desire to create her debut feature film, Beyond the Visible: Hilma af Klint. Its subject is the pioneering abstract female artist, Hilma af Klint, whose name does not appear prominently in art history books, or on the walls of the world’s biggest gallery spaces.

And yet, before Mondrian and Kandinsky, there was af Klint, who was modestly creating her visionary wares from a small Swedish island village, creating some of the earliest examples of what is now termed the abstract expressionist style. Due to her humble nature, and the fact that the art world was and still is dominated by men, her oeuvre and unique style was seemingly forgotten from art history for over ten decades.

Now it’s your turn to re-write art history – we’re handing over the paintbrush and palette to you.

In light of the film’s UK and Ireland release with Modern Films on 9 October, Little White Lies and Modern Films are asking you to create your own Beyond the Visible postcard.

The Brief

In your own interpretation of af Klint’s abstract style, design a postcard depicting a portrait of Hilma af Klint. Your entry can be landscape or portrait, but must be submitted at standard postcard size (A6).

Here’s a handy toolkit to help you get started, plus a few more reference images of Klint’s work.

The Prize

One winner will receive a copy of the first three volumes of Hilma af Klint’s catalogue raisonne, which are printed in an exclusive edition designed by Patric Leo, a selection of official merchandise, a set of Modern Films DVDs focusing on great artists, including Manifesto, Boom for Real, Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda, Shooting the Mafia, Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché, Show Me the Pictures: The Story of Jim Marshall and Beyond The Visible: Hilma af Klint.

The winning artwork will also be printed on postcards included in the DVD package, and we’ll throw in a copy of Little White Lies magazine and our new book, Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks for good measure.

How to Enter

All entries must be sent to competitions@tcolondon.com under the subject line ‘Beyond the Visible creative brief’ by midday GMT on Wednesday 7 October.

You can also send us your entry via Twitter or Instagram by tagging @LWLies, but be sure to email us a hi-res version of your entry as well. Please remember to include your full name so we know who to credit. Good luck!

Daphne du Maurier’s stories have been delighting audiences for the best part of a century, spawning more than a dozen film adaptations and tens of television dramatisations. One more to add to the catalogue: Ben Wheatley’s Rebecca, a sun-dappled psychological thriller based on the author’s famed 1938 novel of the same name.

Starring Armie Hammer as dashing widower Maxim de Winter and Lily James as his unnamed suitor, who becomes haunted by the memory of her new husband’s late first wife, this bold retelling promises to bring du Maurier’s timeless gothic romance to a new audience. To celebrate the release of Rebecca on Netflix on 21 October, we’re setting a new creative brief inspired by the film and the source material.

The Brief

For this brief, we’d like you to create an alternate poster for Rebecca. Your design should be illustrated, and must include the film’s title and at least one of the main stars, Armie Hammer and Lily James. It must be formatted in A1 portrait size.

We’re looking for something bold, completely original and classically styled, whether you choose to take inspiration from the 1930s, when Wheatley’s film is set and when du Maurier’s novel was first published, or a later period.

Here’s the official poster to get your creative juices flowing…

The Prize

The overall winner, as chosen by our in-house team, will receive a first edition copy of ‘Rebecca’ with a postcard signed by Daphne du Maurier. We’ll also throw in a copy of our magazine plus a signed print of Netflix’s alternate Rebecca poster, which will be revealed soon.

The winning entry plus two runners up will be printed and displayed at sites around London, alongside the main official poster, with full credit to the entrant.

How to Enter

My Picture Palace creative brief – the results https://lwlies.com/articles/my-picture-palace-creative-brief-winners/ Fri, 15 May 2020 10:00:58 +0000 https://lwlies.com/?post_type=article&p=23742 You built home cinemas and sent us video clips of them. We watched them and wept with joy.

The post My Picture Palace creative brief – the results appeared first on Little White Lies.

]]>

We were bowled over and deeply moved by the entries we received for our My Picture Palace creative brief. To get you up to speed, we set you the task of emulating the elements of the cinemagoing experience you love the most, but in the comfort of your own home. We then asked you to send us some pictures of video detailing your efforts, and the results were staggering.

Just below we have made a little video compilation of the entries we received, and have included on there the main prizewinner – and let me tell you, it was an extremely tough decision. One of the things that shines through these entries is that everyone has their own personal pleasure points when it comes to the joys of movie going.

Some embrace the flickering lights in the darkness, some cherish the communal aspect and the notion of being thrown together with random strangers in the search of a collective high (hard to recreate this one now!), while others like the food and the luxury of a cinema trip, and others still are supremely focused on the imagination and glory of the images themselves.

I loved Jazz Denney’s Gnome Cinema under the stars, which brought together a bed sheet, a projector, a piece of wood, some paints and a garden gnome to beautiful effect. Lola Stammberger built her Lola Cinemas a pastoral zen retreat and explained her all-encompassing programming vision, while Dominic Graham and his team decided to throw everything in the pot and just remake Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey – with dazzling results.

Romy Harink’s cinema is made from recycled and reclaimed objects, and all the signs, sights and details are present and correct. Lucy’s cinema offers a gender-based twist on the Everyman chain, and Angelina Marilyn, a film producer, has transformed her living space into a neon dream as a way to pass the time on lockdown.

Cath Shayler and gang haven’t so much recreated a cinema, as they have the entire process of going to the cinema: their Viva Las Cine is focused on the indecisive movie goer, and they explain how their Picture Palace places the movie, seat and screen selection on various games of pure chance.

The movie haven created by Matt Blount is something that most cinephiles likely dream of – a cave of cinema built out of Blu-rays, books, posters and magazines. And finally, Rebecca Delfuto has addressed the idea of not being able to assemble in groups by attaching a (possible very dangerous) cinema screen (tablet) to the front of her bike and creating a travelling cinema.

Our highest commendation and top prize goes to Tom Enderby and Anna Garvey’s video entitled A Trip to the Picture Palace, in which a little dog (Nora) takes heed of Little White Lies’ recommended review of Alex Ross Perry’s Her Smell, and heads of on a grand day out to her local Everydog cinema to see it.

We felt that this video not only offered an ingenious riff on the possibilities of recreating a cinema in the confines of your own home, but also the universal joys of making a movie pilgrimage and every decision and variable that it entails.

Thanks everyone for your entries, and thanks again to our partners at Modern Films and Joe and Seph’s.
