No, that isn’t some kind of crazy movie mirage – it is Adam Sandler opting to put aside his garish lowbrow comedy side project to star in something a little bit more refined. And, as with his sublime career outlier, Punch-Drunk Love, Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) gives him a platform to flex his acting muscles and prove to the world once more that he’s a damn fine performer when he wants to be.
The film is a sort-of follow-up to Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale, and it sees Dustin Hoffman playing a overbearing patriarch whose art career never took off. He suppresses his bitterness by taking it out on his children from various marriages: Danny (Sandler), Matthew (Ben Stiller) and Jean (Elizabeth Marvel).
The Meyerowitz Stories drops on to Netflix on 13 October, but in the interim do take a look at this snazzy first trailer.
