Maryland native Jason Beakes is a guy who defies death on a near daily basis. For almost 30 years, it has become a ritual for the champion kayaker to amble down to Great Falls – one of the most intense stretches of whitewater rapids on the planet and situated 14 miles from Washington DC up the Potomac River – and just tip himself over the edge and paddle for dear mercy. This, of course, comes after intense personal preparations and a thorough scoping out of the aggression of the water on any given day. It’s not merely that he has to be sure that his body is up to the job, but his mind is in the right place and fully focused on the matter at hand – one slip-up, and it’s curtains.
This new film – the second in the Journey From The Source series – is entitled Jason Beakes vs. Hurricane Whitewater, and it takes us down-river with Beakes as he smashes through foam, tumbles over ridges and even completes and impressive 360 degree flip on the home stretch. It presents a man at one with the water on which he rides, anticipating every dip and rivulet and reacting with every muscle in his body.
