The “symphony” movie was a very big deal in the silent era. These works took the form of extended, non-narritive montages which linked together a sequence of random moments whose only real connection was simple geography. It was then for the viewer to extract any social or political subtext from the images, and sometimes, the tone of the accompanying score.
Director Alex Barrett has chosen to exhume this form as a way to celebrate life in London, and his second feature, London Symphony, is set to receive its world premiere the 2017 Edinburgh Film Festival. The aim of the film was to capture a city at a very specific point in its history, and the “story” is told over four chapters intended to represent the movements of a symphony.
